SUMMARY:Supporting EAL in the Early Years for Practitioners Working in Schools
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nThis interactive virtual session considers how we best support multilingual children and their families. It will reflect on how working with families can make the biggest difference and offer practical advice for everyday practice. \nMultilingual children and families are an important part of the fabric in our early years settings. How do we best support and grow their language skills to ensure they reach a good level of English while maintaining their home language? \nThis session will support practitioners to: \n\nIdentify and discuss how English as an additional language (EAL) is acquired in early years\nDevelop good practice to inclusively support all children applying effective EAL principles\n\nLouise Campbell-White and Alison Heseltine will deliver this session. \nLouise Campbell-White \nLouise Campbell-White has worked in early years for over eight years\, focusing on supporting children and families with English as an Additional Language (EAL). Louise works directly with early years educators\, supporting their everyday delivery of high-quality inclusive EAL education. Louise began her career teaching English to children and adults in Japan and then returned to the UK to work as a school advisor for Somerset’s Ethnic Minority Achievement Service. Louise writes and delivers training and has written articles for NALDIC and The Under 5s publications. She has also been a speaker at Nursey World’s annual conference. \nAlison Heseltine \nAlison Heseltine\, an Early Years Development Manager for the Early Years Alliance\, has over 20 years of experience supporting children\, families\, and providers. Alison writes and delivers training nationally and takes a lead on the importance of speech\, communication\, and language for the Alliance. Her personal experiences have influenced the focus of her work – the importance of communication and language for children and the role of families in supporting their children’s learning and development at home. \nThis session is an online interactive workshop that will encourage reflective discussion and learning together; it is\, therefore\, an expectation that you will have your camera on. There will be opportunities for sharing in breakout rooms so that we can learn about practice from each other and get the most learning from this workshop. \n\n This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol\, Bath and North East Somerset\, Swindon\, Wiltshire\, Somerset\, North Somerset\, Gloucestershire\, South Gloucestershire). We will also prioritise settings and childminders in areas of deprivation.

SUMMARY:Expressive Arts and Design: an Immersive Experience for Children - Open Study Day at Great Expectations Day Nursery
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nWhen visiting Great Expectations\, you will see that we have designed the learning environment to optimise independence and freedom of choice where children can have the autonomy to choose where and how they wish to be creative and access resources without continually referring to the adult. We believe that children should be given the time and space to explore\, experiment and develop their own ways of creating as individuals whilst being exposed to a variety of artists and techniques. Each year\, we hold an Art Exhibition to celebrate our children’s work with their families and encourage their parents to value the creative process. \nDuring this morning session\, you will have the opportunity to go on a learning walk and hear more about our ethos towards creativity. We will have our workshop and outdoor space open so you can see children being absorbed within the creative process and work alongside them to notice how the knowledge and skills of the staff facilitate each individual child’s creativity. You will also actively engage in a workshop where we will look at an adult-led approach to creativity Vs a child led and how we don’t have to be artistic or expressive to support children and encourage creative growth. \nFinally\, we will learn about the Reggio Emilia approach\, look at the wider EYFS curriculum\, see how creativity in Early Years is part of everything we do\, and become inspired by EAD becoming mathematical and part of UW. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nAims of the day\n\nTo develop a strong understanding of the difference between adult-led vs child-led within creativity and look at various approaches – specifically the Reggio Emilia Approach\nTo have a clearer understanding of how to work alongside children to encourage and facilitate creativity whilst developing an understanding of artists and techniques\nHow EAD links with the wider EYFS curriculum\nTo break down own personal barriers to creativity\n\nTimetable\n\n9:00- 9:15 Welcome\, introduction and learning walk and discussion around pedagogy\, independence and environment.\n9:15-10:00- Looking at Reggio Emilia’s Approach to creativity\, looking at the process over product and how to facilitate an individual child’s creativity and choice of expression.\n10:00- 10.15- Break\n10:15- 11:45- Practical opportunity to work alongside children\, observe creativity and become part of the creative process.\n11.45- 12.30- Reflections\, personal barriers and how EAD links with the wider EYFS curriculum.\n\nGreat Expectations is situated within the heart of Bromley Heath\, Downend\, Bristol. Our setting is in two houses where we provide outstanding childcare and create a home from home environment where the children can feel safe and comfortable. \nAt our setting we have two artists\, one who holds a foundation degree in Art Therapy and our Early Years Teacher who holds an art degree. These highly qualified practitioners encourage us all to view EAD as an immersive experience where creativity can be used to create a stronger sense of self and support PSED\, C&L development and it is fully embedded within our wider curriculum.
