SUMMARY:Brilliance of Block Play
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nBlock Play is a fundamental and integral part of early childhood education. So open-ended and full of endless possibilities! \nThis will be a first-hand\, hands-on\, experiential session with opportunities to playfully explore Block Play. \nChildren’s collaborative\, creative constructions offer such a vivid window onto all aspects of their learning – here we will be looking at Block Play through a specifically “mathematical lens”. \nWe will reflect together on how to create enriched and enlivened Block Play spaces; how to support children’s learning trajectories as they journey through the 7 stages of Block Play; and\, how to observe and scaffold the huge range of mathematical and spatial skills children demonstrate whilst filling and fitting\, making and modelling\, reproducing and representing with Blocks. \nThis session is being delivered by trainer Robin Taylor. Robin is Assistant Head at St. Pauls Nursery School and a Local Specialist Leader for Maths in the EYs. \n\n This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol\, Bath and North East Somerset\, Swindon\, Wiltshire\, Somerset\, North Somerset\, Gloucestershire\, South Gloucestershire). We will also prioritise settings and childminders in areas of deprivation.

SUMMARY:Developing an Early Years Curriculum – Strengthening Early Years Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nA high-quality Early Years curriculum is central to giving every child the Best Start in Life. This session will support practitioners and leaders to develop a curriculum that is ambitious\, inclusive and responsive to the unique needs\, experiences and cultural capital of the children\, families and communities they serve. \nDrawing on Bristol’s Early Years Curriculum Guidance\, participants will explore what curriculum means in practice: everything we want children to experience\, learn and be able to do. We will consider how to identify learning priorities\, build on what children already know and can do\, and create meaningful opportunities that help children develop the knowledge\, skills and understanding they need for future learning. \nThe session will explore the three curriculum elements of Intent\, Implementation and Impact\, considering how curriculum design\, pedagogy\, assessment\, the environment and adult-child interactions work together to support children’s progress. Participants will also reflect on how a coherently planned and sequenced curriculum helps children know more\, remember more and do more over time. \nParticipants will: \n\nDevelop a clear understanding of curriculum in the Early Years.\nExplore how to identify meaningful learning priorities based on the needs of their children and community.\nConsider how curriculum intent\, implementation and impact are connected.\nReflect on the role of play\, the environment\, routines and interactions in bringing a curriculum to life.\nExplore how assessment can be used to inform curriculum decisions and support progress.\nDevelop strategies for designing an ambitious and responsive curriculum that supports all children to thrive.\n\nThis session is suitable for practitioners and leaders who want to review\, refine or develop their curriculum and strengthen the coherence\, progression and impact of children’s learning experiences across their setting. SUMMARY:Talking About Twos: Behaviour: Regulate\, Relate and Reason
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nTwo-year-olds are learning to understand and manage big emotions\, navigate relationships and make sense of the world around them. When children experience moments of dysregulation\, our role is to understand what they are communicating and provide the support they need. \nDrawing on Dr Bruce Perry’s work on the importance of the three Rs\, regulate\, relate and reason\, this session will explore how children develop emotional regulation through safe\, responsive relationships and supportive environments. Together\, we’ll consider how co-regulation\, connection and curiosity can help us respond to children’s behaviour in ways that build confidence\, emotional resilience and positive relationships. SUMMARY:Observing Through the Eyes of a Child - The Emotional Environment and Leadership Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nWhat can we learn when we intentionally view our setting through the eyes of a child? This online session invites Early Years leaders to explore how child-centred observation can become a powerful tool for continuous improvement. By stepping into the child’s experience\, leaders will gain fresh insights into the quality of environments\, interactions\, routines\, and learning opportunities within their provision. \nDrawing on reflective practice and observation techniques\, participants will examine how children’s perspectives can reveal strengths\, identify barriers to engagement\, and highlight opportunities to enhance wellbeing\, belonging\, and learning. The session will provide practical strategies for gathering evidence from a child’s viewpoint and using these insights to inform meaningful centre improvement planning. \nIdeal for Early Years leaders\, managers\, and aspiring leaders\, this session will support participants to strengthen reflective leadership\, foster a culture of continuous improvement\, and ensure that children’s voices and experiences remain at the heart of decision-making.
