SUMMARY:Brilliance of Block Play
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nBlock Play is a fundamental and integral part of early childhood education. So open-ended and full of endless possibilities! \nThis will be a first-hand\, hands-on\, experiential session with opportunities to playfully explore Block Play. \nChildren’s collaborative\, creative constructions offer such a vivid window onto all aspects of their learning – here we will be looking at Block Play through a specifically “mathematical lens”. \nWe will reflect together on how to create enriched and enlivened Block Play spaces; how to support children’s learning trajectories as they journey through the 7 stages of Block Play; and\, how to observe and scaffold the huge range of mathematical and spatial skills children demonstrate whilst filling and fitting\, making and modelling\, reproducing and representing with Blocks. \nThis session is being delivered by trainer Robin Taylor. Robin is Assistant Head at St. Pauls Nursery School and a Local Specialist Leader for Maths in the EYs. \n\n This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol\, Bath and North East Somerset\, Swindon\, Wiltshire\, Somerset\, North Somerset\, Gloucestershire\, South Gloucestershire). We will also prioritise settings and childminders in areas of deprivation.

SUMMARY:Leading a Setting to Success\, With Your Team and Community: Open Study Day at Hartcliffe Nursery School
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nHartcliffe Nursery School went into special measures in June 2022 and emerged in October 2024 with a judgement of good. In a deprived area of Bristol\, it was struggling with various challenges\, and staff morale was at rock bottom. It is now thriving\, and staff are empowered and confident. \nThis Open Study Day will take you on our inspirational improvement journey. With vision and values at its core\, we will discuss how we built the foundations for improvement and success with the existing team and the community. \nWe will: \n\nDescribe our context\, the challenges we faced and the importance of considering the community\nReflect on the importance of having a shared vision and values and clarity of roles and responsibilities\nExplore ways that you can empower and enable teams to be motivated\, confident and understand why we are doing things\nHow\, from setting priorities\, you build next steps\, work out the detail and actions\, and monitor and evaluate collaboratively\nConsider frameworks and systems that hold people\, and make things sustainable and accountable\nLook at the use of models to support implementation and quality improvement (e.g. EEF ‘Implementation model’\, and David Cooper Ryder’s ‘Appreciative Enquiry Model’)\nExplore the how crucial supervision and performance management is\, and how this is done in an empowering way\nFinally\, we will look at how you can own your Ofsted inspection through strong knowledge of the EYFS framework and the confidence in what you have implemented.\n\nThe Open Study Day will consist of learning walks and observation time to see the room set-ups and routines\, time with the leaders and SENDCo to understand some of the changes and curriculum\, and time with Cate Peel\, the Head of Hartcliffe Nursery. \nThis is for Heads or Managers of Early Years settings or Nursery Schools. We may have to prioritise those from deprived areas. It will be strictly one person per setting as we expect this to be popular. Should it become sold out\, we will operate a Reserve List; please email sph@beyth.co.uk to join this list. \nOutline for the day (More details to follow)\nArrival: 9:30am\nFinish: 4:00pm \nRefreshments will be available\, but please bring your own lunch. SUMMARY:Live Panel Webinar: Why Playful Maths? With Dr Helen J Williams and Panelists
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \n“Mathematics could be like roller-skating\, but usually it’s like being told to stop roller-skating and come in and tidy your room.” – Richard Winter (2009) \nDo you want to be joyful\, creative and playful with Early Maths? \nDo you want to grow your confidence in being a playful partner with children as they explore their world through mathematical noticing\, mathematical talk\, and mathematical thinking? \nCome and join Dr Helen Williams and our expert panel in a dynamic conversation about how to create a playful\, maths-rich pedagogy and provision. A provision that is open\, active\, and flexible—full of challenging tasks and interesting maths tools—allows children to develop their own playful inquiry and understanding of mathematical concepts. \nHelen will discuss the research evidenced in her book “Playful Mathematics” and inspire us to rethink mathematics\, explore how children learn best\, and learn how adults can best support children’s mathematical learning. \nOur Panel\nDr Helen J Williams \nDr Helen J Williams is an independent consultant specialising in the learning and teaching of early mathematics. Her work includes writing and researching as well as teaching mathematics alongside colleagues in schools and settings\, contributing to ITT and in-service conferences across the UK and Europe. She was awarded lifetime membership of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in 2024\, is a member of the British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics\, an associate of Early Education and a founder member of the Early Childhood Mathematics group\, who contributed the mathematics section to the ‘Birth To Five Matters’ guidance. Helen’s doctorate was completed with Roehampton University in 2014 and explored the mathematical potential of role play. She tweets as @helenjwc and blogs (sporadically) here. Her book “Playful Mathematics for Children 3 to 7.” was published by SAGE in March 2022 and won the Nursery World Professional Book of the Year Award later that year. \nRobin Taylor is Associate Head of St. Paul’s Nursery School and Children’s Centre and a Specialist Leader in Early Mathematics. He is professional development lead for the NCETM’s Early Years Programme in Somerset and facilitates the Maths Network for Bristol and Beyond Stronger Practice Hub. Robin is obsessed with Block Play! And is currently working with Bristol University PHD student Michael Rumbelow in researching Block Play here at St. Paul’s Nursery School. \nZoi Chambers \nZoi Chambers is the Early Years Curriculum Lead at Begbrook Primary Academy. She thrives on growing her own professional development so she can spread her joy and passion to support and develop provision in Early Years\, through child led play\, and high-quality adult interactions. For the last two academic years\, Zoi has had the privilege of being part of the Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics in Early years and has applied the knowledge and understanding she gained\, and has woven it through their child-centred curriculum to ensure the joy of maths is deliberately placed everywhere! The provision in the environment and the quality of teaching has improved which\, in turn\, is ensuring raised outcomes for their children. \nJulian Swindale is Leader of Teaching and Learning at Sefton Park Infant and Juniors Schools. He studied drawing at art school from a very early age culminating in a Masters in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art. This lifelong interest in drawing and ‘looking’ has been a lens through which to explore the teaching of mathematics to young children. Julian has introduced the Montessori cycle of activity to his nursery setting in order to create a platform for children’s self expression in mathematics and provide an open canvas for exploring the intersection of Art and Mathematical development. A central question is never far away from his teaching: ‘If the hands are key research tools for young children\, then what do I best put within their reach?’ \nOur Live Panel Webinars are special evening events featuring a panel of experts. They are highly interactive events featuring a live chat\, during which we encourage our audience to ask questions\, share their thoughts on the topics we discuss\, and network with other attendees.
