SUMMARY:Maths Matters More Than Ever! Free Mini-Conference With Guest Speaker Dr Sue Gifford and Maths Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nDo you want to: \n\nUnderstand the firm foundations of mathematics?\nIncrease your own confidence in supporting children’s mathematical learning?\n“Mathematise your day” and get playful and creative with maths?\nHelp children develop positive attitudes to mathematics?\nDevelop your own maths subject knowledge in pattern and spatial reasoning?\n\nSue Gifford \nMaths Matters more than ever! \nThere is an urgent call to improve children’s outcomes\, develop positive attitudes to mathematics\, address high levels of maths anxiety in the early years workforce\, and develop high-quality\, maths-rich\, playful pedagogy! \nMathematics is empowering and joyful and ALL children are entitled to develop confidence and competence across all areas of maths. \nEarly Years maths is the strongest predictor of later school achievement – more than reading and attention skills. Maths needs to be as much of a priority as language and communication\, directly impacting on each child’s educational progress and life chances. \nAs curricula across all phases of education are being reviewed\, Sue and colleagues at Early Childhood Maths Group are championing a broad and balanced Early Years Maths Curriculum\, ensuring children have much richer experiences and firmer foundations in mathematics. \nEarly Childhood Mathematics must be firmly rooted in Spatial Reasoning and the Power of Patterns. \nProfessional development is essential\, equipping early years practitioners with strong subject knowledge and pedagogical approaches to support children’s learning and attitudes in mathematics. \nDr Sue Gifford\, Professor Emerita in the University of Roehampton’s School of Education\, will be celebrating all that is creative and playful about early mathematics and digging deeper into pattern\, problem-solving and spatial reasoning. Learn more about Dr Sue Gifford here. \nSue will be joined by local specialist leaders in early maths\, including Robin Taylor (SPH/Boolean Maths Hub)\, who will facilitate workshops and discussions around maths-rich pedagogies\, provision\, and practice. \nAgenda\n5:00pm Dinner (included)\n6:00pm Welcome from Lucy Driver (Stronger Practice Hub Lead)\n6:15pm Keynote Speaker: Sue Gifford “Maths Matters more than ever!”\nFollowed by: Digging Deeper: further discussions and reflections on playful provision in Early Mathematics\n6:45pm The Brilliance of Blocks: Robin invites you to construct and “deconstruct” Block Play through a mathematica lens\, digging deeper into Spatial Reasoning as a crucial foundation to all mathematics learning\n7:30pm Sue invites you to Q+A questions and reflections \nThis is a free Maths conference for early years practitioners and childminders in our SPH area.
