SUMMARY:Somerset Baby Practitioner Network Meeting - November 2026
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our Baby Practitioner Network Meeting\, which is open to anyone working with babies (e.g.\, nurseries\, childminders\, PVI settings) in Somerset. \nBaby Practitioner Networks provide a lively and dynamic opportunity for professional conversations around the needs of our youngest learners. \nEach meeting involves an opportunity for discussion\, sharing celebrations\, problem-solving as a group\, and sharing recent research and articles. \nLouise Hannan from University Centre Somerset College Group is going to be joining us to share insights into a project that explores the experiences of babies attending early years settings from the babies’ perspective. \nA Day in the Life of the Baby Room: Exploring the Environment Through the Eyes of the Child \nThe early years of a child’s life are critical for cognitive\, emotional\, and social development. In the England\, the increasing number of babies attending nursery and daycare settings has prompted both academic and policy interest in the quality and accessibility of early childhood education and care (ECEC). Recent government reforms\, particularly the expansion of funded childcare entitlements for children as young as nine months\, have intensified debates around the adequacy of provision\, workforce capacity\, and the lived experiences of infants in these settings. This project explores the experiences of the children attending a setting and a provision\, from the child’s perspective. \nNote: This Network meeting is for early years practitioners and childminders in Somerset only. If you are from another area\, please get in touch with the SPH to find out what is available.

SUMMARY:Interactive Writing
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nInteractive Writing is an evidence-informed approach that supports children at the earliest stages of their writing journey. Aligned with the DfE’s Best Start in Life vision and Writing Framework\, it recognises the importance of high-quality interactions\, language development and shared thinking in building strong foundations for writing. \nThis session will explore the EEF’s approach to Interactive Writing\, where educator and child work together through a purposeful back-and-forth conversation to create a message that can be written and shared. Through this collaborative process\, children develop confidence as writers and mark-makers while strengthening their oral language\, communication and early literacy skills. \nParticipants will explore how Interactive Writing can motivate young children to see themselves as writers\, while supporting the development of the knowledge\, skills and attitudes that underpin later successful writing. Using evidence-informed strategies\, practitioners will consider how to make writing meaningful\, engaging and accessible for all children. \nParticipants will: \n\nUnderstand the principles of Interactive Writing.\nExplore how talk and shared thinking support early writing development.\nConsider how meaningful writing opportunities can motivate young writers and mark-makers.\n\nReflect on evidence-informed approaches that strengthen children’s language\, literacy and confidence as writers \n\n This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol\, Bath and North East Somerset\, Swindon\, Wiltshire\, Somerset\, North Somerset\, Gloucestershire\, South Gloucestershire). We will also prioritise settings and childminders in areas of deprivation.

SUMMARY:My Home as a Playground with Helen Battelley: Supporting Movement Play and Physical Development in Childminding Settings
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nChildminding environments offer something incredibly unique within early childhood: warm\, relational\, home-based spaces where movement can be naturally embedded into everyday life. Drawing on current research this practical and interactive webinar explores how childminders can transform ordinary home environments into rich movement spaces that support children’s physical development\, confidence\, wellbeing and learning. \nThis session is designed to empower childminders to recognise the enormous value of the home environment as a place where movement\, play and learning naturally belong together. \nNote: This session may be recorded. \n\n \n \n Helen Battelley\n \n Helen Battelley is an internationally renowned consultant\, trainer\, author and speaker in physical activity and movement in early and primary education\, with an MA in Early Childhood Physical Activity. Her philosophy is to embed movement within the curriculum\, recognising that young children learn through movement and that practice must be accessible to all. \n Her sessions build practitioners' confidence\, motivation and core movement skills\, enabling them to create their own movement activities as part of everyday planning. Staff often describe the courses as reigniting a spark to become more physically active in their own lives. \n \n \n\n\n This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol\, Bath and North East Somerset\, Swindon\, Wiltshire\, Somerset\, North Somerset\, Gloucestershire\, South Gloucestershire). SUMMARY:Tuning in to Babies CPD Programme
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nWednesday 27th January 2027 and Wednesday 10th February (6:15-8:15pm) – Attendees are expected to join both sessions \nBabies communicate from birth through their movements\, expressions\, sounds\, emotions and relationships with others. Tuning in to babies means being curious about who they are\, what they are communicating and how we can respond in ways that help them feel safe\, understood and valued. \nAcross these two sessions\, we’ll explore the principles of attunement and what it means to be emotionally available and responsive to babies. We’ll reflect on how practitioners understand babies ’behaviour\, crying and communication\, and how co-regulation supports babies to develop a sense of security and wellbeing. \nTogether\, we’ll consider the important role of the key person\, the adult’s role in actively tuning in\, and how responsive care\, learning environments and everyday interactions support babies ’learning and development. \nWe’ll explore how attuned practice connects with babies ’learning\, and how working in partnership with families helps us build a deeper understanding of each baby’s unique experiences\, needs and relationships. \nAcross both sessions\, we’ll reflect on the barriers that can make tuning in to babies and their families more challenging\, and explore practical approaches to strengthening attuned\, relationship-based practice so that every baby feels seen\, heard and understood. \n\n This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol\, Bath and North East Somerset\, Swindon\, Wiltshire\, Somerset\, North Somerset\, Gloucestershire\, South Gloucestershire). We will also prioritise settings and childminders in areas of deprivation.

SUMMARY:Loose Parts Play with Childminding UK
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nThe theory of loose parts has been around for approximately 50 years. However\, it is only in recent years that Early Years’ settings have realised the importance of loose parts in stimulating children’s curiosity\, creativity and imagination and have started to include them within their environment. \nLoose parts play a huge part in encouraging curiosity\, imagination and creativity into our learning environments. This training will help you to understand more about how loose parts play can help to actively develop the brain. You will learn about the type of resources to use and suggestions about how to implement them into your setting. \nThis virtual course will be delivered by Childminding UK Childminding Consultants. \nSpaces are limited on this course\, so we will only be accepting bookings in our SPH area.
