DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nJacqui Lewis \nUsing the beautiful simplicity of sociograms\, this course will provide you with a visual representation of the relationships with the children in your setting. As early years educators and leaders of pedagogy\, you are invited to deconstruct\, confront\, theorise\, and potentially think otherwise about the significance of positive and nurturing relationships within the setting. \nAims and objectives – Delegates will have opportunities to: \n\nReflect\, identify\, question\, and potentially reconsider assumptions and perceptions of the connections and relationships with children in our settings.\nConsider the significance of equitable\, positive\, and nurturing relationships\, between every child and early years educator\, to have the best possible start in life.\nExplore how the concept of relationship mapping can support each child to connect to at least one adult in the setting: to be known and feel felt.\nReflect upon the individual and pedagogical factors of influence to these relationships\, such as attachment stages and types\, play\, deployment\, attendance\, interaction styles\, key person approach\, gender constructs\, transitions\, unconscious bias and culture.\n\nThis training is suitable for all early educators from 0-5 years. It will be interactive with discussion and break out rooms\, so please join with the expectation of participating. \nThis training is being delivered by Jacqui Lewis on behalf of the Stronger Practice Hub. \nJacqui Lewis is an advocate for children\, childhoods\, and high quality\, inclusive early childhood education. SUMMARY:Sensory Processing in the Early Years: What It is and Why It’s Important with Christina Welsh
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nThis training is intended for practitioners and those who work with babies and children in the early years; the training aims to improve their confidence in identifying and supporting those experiencing sensory processing differences. The training will introduce the eight sensory systems and how they may have an impact on a child’s experience of the world around them. Training participants will become familiar with what is meant by ‘sensory processing’ and take part in interactive activities to embed this understanding. \nLearning Outcomes \n\nTo gain an in-depth understanding of the eight sensory systems\, particularly in relation to the early years\nTo understand what sensory processing is and how this differs from person to person\nTo explore ways to create a sensory environment conducive to learning\nTo apply what is learned in the training session to everyday practice supporting babies and children\n\nAbout Christina Welsh \nChristina Welsh \nChristina Welsh\, Education Programme Manager at the Council for Disabled Children. \nChristina has worked at the Council for Disabled Children in the Education and Equalities team since August 2022. She manages the Early Years SEND Partnership programme and supports the coordination of the Special Educational Consortium. As part of her role at the EYSEND Partnership\, Christina develops and leads training on topics such as sensory processing and the Equality Act for parents/carers and practitioners\, provides strategic support on inclusion to local authorities\, and coordinates large events bringing together representatives from across the early years sector. \nChristina has worked in the education nonprofit sector for seven years\, developing national\, regional\, and global education programmes for underserved communities. DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nDr Elena Hoicka \nIn this session Dr Elena Hoicka will discuss research-based evidence about how to share humour with children from infancy through 3 years. She will discuss when infants first understand and produce humour and go through 21 types of humour that children appreciate in the first four years. She will also discuss how you can share humour with children and understand when they joke with you. Finally\, she will discuss research about early humour’s potential benefits. You will have a chance to discuss and reflect on humour you’ve seen in your practice; how you engage in humour with young children; and what benefits you might see in using humour in the early years. \nNote: This session will be recorded. \nAbout Dr Elena Hoicka\nDr Elena Hoicka is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of Bristol. Her research focuses on humour\, creativity\, and pretending in the early years. She has published in top academic journals including Child Development and Developmental Psychology and has run grants funded by the ESRC and British Academy. Hundreds of news articles and broadcasts have covered her research worldwide\, including BBC News\, the Telegraph\, the Independent\, The Times\, the Daily Mail\, Metro\, and the Mirror. SUMMARY:Supporting EAL in the Early Years for Practitioners Working in Schools
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nThis interactive virtual session considers how we best support multilingual children and their families. It will reflect on how working with families can make the biggest difference and offer practical advice for everyday practice. \nMultilingual children and families are an important part of the fabric in our early years settings. How do we best support and grow their language skills to ensure they reach a good level of English while maintaining their home language? \nThis session will support practitioners to: \n\nIdentify and discuss how English as an additional language (EAL) is acquired in early years\nDevelop good practice to inclusively support all children applying effective EAL principles\n\nLouise Campbell-White and Alison Heseltine will deliver this session. \nLouise Campbell-White \nLouise Campbell-White has worked in early years for over eight years\, focusing on supporting children and families with English as an Additional Language (EAL). Louise works directly with early years educators\, supporting their everyday delivery of high-quality inclusive EAL education. Louise began her career teaching English to children and adults in Japan and then returned to the UK to work as a school advisor for Somerset’s Ethnic Minority Achievement Service. Louise writes and delivers training and has written articles for NALDIC and The Under 5s publications. She has also been a speaker at Nursey World’s annual conference. \nAlison Heseltine \nAlison Heseltine\, an Early Years Development Manager for the Early Years Alliance\, has over 20 years of experience supporting children\, families\, and providers. Alison writes and delivers training nationally and takes a lead on the importance of speech\, communication\, and language for the Alliance. Her personal experiences have influenced the focus of her work – the importance of communication and language for children and the role of families in supporting their children’s learning and development at home. \nThis session is an online interactive workshop that will encourage reflective discussion and learning together; it is\, therefore\, an expectation that you will have your camera on. SUMMARY:Exploring and Growing Fresh Produce in an Early Years Setting (for Nursery Schools and Schools With a Nursery or Preschool Class)
DESCRIPTION:Stronger Practice Hub Event \nThis session is for Early Years settings of all sizes who would like to improve their understanding of food\, in particular vegetables\, herbs\, spices and fruits. The session is led by Jo Ingleby\, the Director of The Children’s Kitchen\, a Feeding Bristol project focused on encouraging young children and families to explore\, cook and grow fresh produce. The project focuses on the areas of Bristol with the highest levels of food insecurity. Settings working with The Children’s Kitchen are encouraged to move away from traditional baking on cakes and towards child-led food sessions led by curiosity and creativity.  \nThe session will cover:  \n\nSetting up and running food sessions in your setting; the basics of what equipment you need and practical tips for exploring fresh food.\nCreating growing spaces on a budget with a term-based growing plan.\nLinking plot to plate\, with simple food and growing session ideas.\nDeveloping a whole-setting approach to food.\n\nThis session is suitable for Maintained Nursery Schools\, PVI settings and schools with a Nursery or Preschool class. \nThis online session will be recorded. \n\n    This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol\, Bath and North East Somerset\, Somerset\, North Somerset\, Gloucestershire\, South Gloucestershire).
