The Bristol & Beyond Early Years Stronger Practice Hub is working with Make Believe Arts to bring Helicopter Stories and Poetry Basket to 80 early years settings across our SPH region including: North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire.

To apply to be part of this project you need to demonstrate that your early years setting is fully committed to learning about and delivering Helicopter Stories on a weekly basis.

Please read this Information Sheet so you understand what is involved.

What is Helicopter Stories?

Helicopter Stories On Demand gives up to 4 members of your team, ONE YEAR’S access to this online training. The course includes everything you need to begin delivering Helicopter Stories in your setting. Helicopter Stories can be used with children aged 2 to 7 years old.

Helicopter Stories utilises the power of story and poetry to enhance children’s communication and language development, as well as emotional development.

Recruitment of early years settings for Helicopter Stories has now finished.

However, we have a few remaining places which we are offering to childminders in our SPH area.
The deadline for childminders to express an interest is the 31st August 2024.

Dingleys Promise

Dingley’s Promise is a charity that supports children with SEND in the Early Years and their families. In addition to operating five specialist early years settings, the charity provides training across 40 local authorities in England, and 99% of learners would recommend its courses.

Do you want to enhance your support for children with SEND and their families?

The Bristol & Beyond Stronger Practice Hub is funding 20 places on each of the modules: The Voice of the Child and Early Years SEND Transitions.

Priority for the places will be given to settings and childminders in North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, although it is open to everyone in our SPH area.

Schedule

The modules below will take between 5 – 8 hours to complete and can be done in your own time. However, as an SPH we like to grow a community of practice, so we are asking learners to attend a Reflection session on completion.

  • Deadline to complete a Module Registration: 31st August
  • Work through module in your own time: August – October 2024
  • Reflection/Completion session: October – Date tbc

The Voice of the Child

This module aims to:

  • To highlight the importance of listening to the voice of every child with SEND, no matter which method they use to communicate.
  • To provide learners with strategies to fully support children with SEND and communication differences within their setting.
  • To support your setting’s wider development of inclusive practice.

Early Years SEND Transitions

This module aims to:

  • To explore the elements of transition from the perspective of a child, family and setting to ensure that the individual needs of the child are fully met.
  • To understand the need of all involved so we can effectively plan and implement transitions with minimal disruption to a child’s developmental progress and emotional wellbeing.
