The Children’s Scrapstore: The Power of Loose Parts Play

Now more than ever young children need to play. They need an environment that’s rich in opportunities for exploration, deep engagement, and communication. This interactive session explores the many benefits of playing with scrap and how it nurtures all areas of development and learning in the EYFS as well as fostering the characteristics of effective learning.

Playing with scrap, both inside and outdoors provides children with limitless provocations, sparking creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Exploring larger scale loose parts also provides physically challenging experiences which supports the prime areas of learning.

You will:

  • Explore the possibilities of open-ended resources and loose part play to support the prime areas (PSED,PD,CL) and Characteristics of Effective Learning
  • Consider the adult role and how high quality interactions can support children’s thinking
  • Take away a bag of scrap to kick start more open ended play opportunities in your own setting

There will be a limit of 20 places per session.

The Children’s Kitchen: Enabling Child-Led Food Exploration

This fun, inspiring and hands-on session aims to introduce you to child-led food exploration and give you ideas and practical insights to take back to your setting. It will also get you thinking about growing and exploring fresh produce, food insecurity, and the importance of this for young children. Each two-hour session will be led by Jo Ingleby, director of The Children’s Kitchen, who has 20 years of experience leading award-winning early years food programmes.

You will be given a goodie bag with recipes, spices and the dish you have made.

You will make your own food to eat during the session so please let us know of any allergies, all ingredients used will be vegan and nut free.

There will be a limit of 30 places per session.

These practical sessions will be followed by two online CPD sessions in September (two hours each) to help practitioners develop their own practice. The themes for these two sessions will be:

  1. Food Exploration: how to encourage children to build healthy relationships with fresh produce in early years settings
  2. Growing: Practical ways to include outdoor learning about food into practice, and linking to cooking and eating.
