Expressive Arts and Design: an Immersive Experience for Children – Open Study Day at Great Expectations Day Nursery

August 15 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm BST

Free

Stronger Practice Hub Event

When visiting Great Expectations, you will see that we have designed the learning environment to optimise independence and freedom of choice where children can have the autonomy to choose where and how they wish to be creative and access resources without continually referring to the adult. We believe that children should be given the time and space to explore, experiment and develop their own ways of creating as individuals whilst being exposed to a variety of artists and techniques. Each year, we hold an Art Exhibition to celebrate our children’s work with their families and encourage their parents to value the creative process.

During this morning session, you will have the opportunity to go on a learning walk and hear more about our ethos towards creativity. We will have our workshop and outdoor space open so you can see children being absorbed within the creative process and work alongside them to notice how the knowledge and skills of the staff facilitate each individual child’s creativity. You will also actively engage in a workshop where we will look at an adult-led approach to creativity Vs a child led and how we don’t have to be artistic or expressive to support children and encourage creative growth.

Finally, we will learn about the Reggio Emilia approach, look at the wider EYFS curriculum, see how creativity in Early Years is part of everything we do, and become inspired by EAD becoming mathematical and part of UW.

Aims of the day

  • To develop a strong understanding of the difference between adult-led vs child-led within creativity and look at various approaches – specifically the Reggio Emilia Approach
  • To have a clearer understanding of how to work alongside children to encourage and facilitate creativity whilst developing an understanding of artists and techniques
  • How EAD links with the wider EYFS curriculum
  • To break down own personal barriers to creativity

Timetable

Great Expectations is situated within the heart of Bromley Heath, Downend, Bristol. Our setting is in two houses where we provide outstanding childcare and create a home from home environment where the children can feel safe and comfortable.

At our setting we have two artists, one who holds a foundation degree in Art Therapy and our Early Years Teacher who holds an art degree. These highly qualified practitioners encourage us all to view EAD as an immersive experience where creativity can be used to create a stronger sense of self and support PSED, C&L development and it is fully embedded within our wider curriculum.

This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, Wiltshire, Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire). We will also prioritise settings and childminders in areas of deprivation.
