The Characteristics of Effective Learning (CoEL) describe the behaviours children use as they learn, including playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically. Supporting children to develop these dispositions is at the heart of high-quality early years practice, and yet finding time to reflect on them as a team can be a challenge.

This staff meeting template, created by the Bristol & Beyond Stronger Practice Hub, gives you everything you need to facilitate a focused, practical 45-minute session with your team. Through four activities, your team will revisit their knowledge of the CoEL, watch a short film, reflect on the adult’s role, and carry out a learning walk of your indoor and outdoor environments. The session ends with agreed actions your team can take forward into everyday practice.
