Black History Month is an annual celebration of Black history, heritage and culture, and 2026 marks its 39th year in the UK. This year’s theme, Honouring Our Communities, encourages us to recognise not only well-known figures, but the Black people whose everyday contributions shape, support and strengthen the communities around us. How settings approach the month matters. Thoughtful planning moves the conversation beyond what we will do in October, to why we are doing it, what children might gain from it and how it connects with our wider inclusive practice.
This staff meeting template, created by the Bristol & Beyond Stronger Practice Hub, gives you everything you need to facilitate a focused, practical session with your team in 1 to 2 hours. Through three activities, your team will examine the intention behind the choices you have made or are considering, explore worked examples that unpack the thinking behind meaningful provision, and watch Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk on the danger of a single story. Along the way you will find clear explanations of tokenism and exoticisation, guidance on inviting families to contribute without placing responsibility on them, and a follow-up activity that asks what your provision looks like on 1 November, once the displays have come down.
