Stronger Practice Hub Event

Increasing numbers of young children are presenting with complex and overlapping needs within early years settings, often before any formal diagnosis or specialist pathway is in place. This practical and reflective session will support practitioners to better understand and respond to children whose communication, sensory processing, emotional regulation and developmental needs may be impacting their wellbeing, participation and learning.

The training will explore how early years practitioners can provide meaningful support through inclusive environments, responsive interactions and adaptable practice, without waiting for formal identification or diagnosis. Delegates will consider how behaviour, play, communication and emotional responses can provide insight into a child’s experiences and needs, alongside practical strategies that can be implemented within everyday early years provision.

The session will provide opportunities for discussion, reflection and shared learning, recognising both the increasing complexity practitioners are encountering and the vital role early years settings play in supporting children and families early.

Learning Aims:

  • To develop understanding of how complex needs can present in the early years
  • To explore how communication, sensory processing and emotional regulation can impact children’s engagement and wellbeing
  • To increase confidence in using practical, inclusive approaches to support children with complex needs
  • To reflect on how environments, routines and adult responses can reduce barriers and support participation
  • To reinforce the importance of early, responsive support for children and families without waiting for diagnosis

Our SEND Network offers a series of informal, online networking sessions designed for early years practitioners to come together, share experiences, and explore key topics related to SEND in early years settings. Each session focuses on a different aspect of practice, providing some specialist input and a space for discussion, reflection, and peer support. This SEND Network session will be facilitated by Springboard Opportunity Group, our SPH Partner who run several Special Schools in North Somerset.

This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, Wiltshire, Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire). We will also prioritise settings and childminders in areas of deprivation.
