This introductory session explores autism in the early years through a strengths-based, neurodevelopmental and inclusive lens. The training supports practitioners to develop a deeper understanding of how autistic children may experience communication, interaction, sensory processing and the early years environment.
The session encourages practitioners to move beyond assumptions and recognise the individuality of each child, considering how differences in communication, play, regulation and sensory processing can influence participation and wellbeing. Delegates will explore practical, supportive approaches that help autistic children feel safe, understood and able to thrive within early years settings.
The training includes practical strategies, environmental adaptations and communication supports that can be embedded into everyday practice to promote inclusion, engagement and positive relationships.
Learning Aims:
- To develop a greater understanding of autism in the early years
- To explore how autistic children may experience communication, interaction, play and sensory processing differently
- To increase awareness of the importance of regulation, predictability and supportive environments
- To consider practical strategies that promote engagement, communication and participation
- To explore approaches that support interaction, attention and emotional wellbeing
- To develop confidence in creating inclusive early years environments that recognise and respond to individual strengths and needs
- To reflect on how adult responses, routines and environmental adaptations can positively support autistic children and their families
Our SEND Network offers a series of informal, online networking sessions designed for early years practitioners to come together, share experiences, and explore key topics related to SEND in early years settings. Each session focuses on a different aspect of practice, providing some specialist input and a space for discussion, reflection, and peer support. This SEND Network session will be facilitated by Springboard Opportunity Group, our SPH Partner who run several Special Schools in North Somerset.
This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, Wiltshire, Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire). We will also prioritise settings and childminders in areas of deprivation.
