This interactive virtual session considers how we best support multilingual children and their families. It will reflect on how working with families can make the biggest difference and offer practical advice for everyday practice.
Multilingual children and families are an important part of the fabric in our early years settings. How do we best support and grow their language skills to ensure they reach a good level of English while maintaining their home language?
This session will support practitioners to:
- Identify and discuss how English as an additional language (EAL) is acquired in early years
- Develop good practice to inclusively support all children applying effective EAL principles
Louise Campbell-White and Alison Heseltine will deliver this session.
Louise Campbell-White has worked in early years for over eight years, focusing on supporting children and families with English as an Additional Language (EAL). Louise works directly with early years educators, supporting their everyday delivery of high-quality inclusive EAL education. Louise began her career teaching English to children and adults in Japan and then returned to the UK to work as a school advisor for Somerset’s Ethnic Minority Achievement Service. Louise writes and delivers training and has written articles for NALDIC and The Under 5s publications. She has also been a speaker at Nursey World’s annual conference.
Alison Heseltine, an Early Years Development Manager for the Early Years Alliance, has over 20 years of experience supporting children, families, and providers. Alison writes and delivers training nationally and takes a lead on the importance of speech, communication, and language for the Alliance. Her personal experiences have influenced the focus of her work – the importance of communication and language for children and the role of families in supporting their children’s learning and development at home.
This session is an online interactive workshop that will encourage reflective discussion and learning together; it is, therefore, an expectation that you will have your camera on. There will be opportunities for sharing in breakout rooms so that we can learn about practice from each other and get the most learning from this workshop.
This training is for early years practitioners and leaders working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area (Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, Wiltshire, Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire). We will also prioritise settings and childminders in areas of deprivation.

Parking
St. Pauls Children’s Centre: There is no on-site parking but parking is available on the road for £1 an hour for a maximum of 3 hours, or in Cabot Circus which is 5-minute walk from the St. Pauls Children’s Centre.
